I loved this project, the research was really inspiring – the art was in the creation and the final canvas almost a by product. The war,the depression all contributed to the national mood ‘unrest at the flux of existence was countered by an urge to encompass it’ and artists wanted to ‘confront disintegration, entropy and violent motion’ . The images were characterised by single unified blocks of colour, to evoke a mood or feeling or express some inner angst or turmoil. The large, spontaneous and richly emotional gestures were a result of unleashing basic, creative, instinctual forces that are deeply hidden in the unconscious mind. I wanted the garden to reflect chaos and use the colour to reflect basic human emotion. I experimented with fire but the final design is based on patterns extracted from disintegrating apples.
